Interview with travel photographer Kristof Göttling

Kristof Göttling
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO PHOTOGRAPH MOST?

Hi, I'm Kristof, I'm from beautiful Nuremberg in Germany and I'm a coach for image editing and photography. What I like to photograph the most is a difficult question, because I do not like to restrict myself.

My favorite thing to photograph is "something beautiful". This may sound strange at first, but I just love to press the shutter. Whether it's a great landscape, a pretty woman, squirrels or even sometimes a wedding. What I like, what is "beautiful" for me, I'll capture. Often, however, it is actually great light that inspires me particularly.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?
Funnily enough, through Instagram and the first iPhone. With the iPhone, photography moved into your pocket, and as an Instagram user from the very beginning, I was really challenged - and enjoyed it. In the past, the app was programmed in such a way that you couldn't upload externally shot and edited pictures. You had to take the picture directly in the app at the right moment and then you could hardly do any editing. I learned a lot during that time!

WHICH IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE PHOTO AND WHY?

Phew... I don't really have a favorite photo. My catalog now contains a good 200,000 photos and new ones are added almost daily. To name a favorite is very, very difficult.

If I had to decide, I would probably choose a photo from Iceland with northern lights and Milky Way or the photo of the supermoon behind the Nuremberg TV tower. Those are absolute highlights... there is even a YouTube video on my channel about the supermoon photo: „Supermoon - the way to the perfect photo

WHICH TIP HAS BROUGHT YOU FORWARD IN PHOTOGRAPHY?

"Just do it!" The simplest tip of all is also the most effective. For far too long (every lunch break during my training as a media designer) I only watched tutorials and rarely put them into practice. Theoretically, I "knew" everything, but photography and everything that goes with it lives from "doing".

You learn the most when you just start and take photos. That's why my tutorials and trainings are always very simple and hands-on. Do not dwell too long with theory, but get into the "doing"! 🙂

WHICH CAMERA AND LENS DO YOU USE MOST OFTEN?
At the moment it is still the Nikon Z7 with the 24-70mm f/2.8. But the camera will soon be replaced by the new Z7ii and I have to say that I have recently come to love my 70-200mm f/2.8 with 2x converter anew. 400mm focal length is a very powerful tool!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR HAUKLAND?

The flexibility to be perfectly equipped for any weather and the microfibre cloth in my sleeve. I always had a cloth to clean my lens in my pocket - now it has a permanent place!
I also find it very understated in appearance, although it has great recognition value. I like that.

DO YOU HAVE A "PHOTO DREAM" OR GOALS FOR THE NEXT MONTHS/YEARS?
Oh, there are so many! ... I want to go on safari again, I want to go to Greenland, I want to photograph icebergs, I want to photograph more underwater, I would like to travel through the US again, Madagascar, Australia, southern Italy, and Brittany in France.... the list is endless 😃😃
